The Kibera Edition: 27th February 2016
host partner STARAYS OLYMPIC SECONDARY SCHOOL HALL
This was the last event for 2016 and was held at Starays Olympic Secondary School hall and brought together 250 youth.
Targeting youth from Nairobi county, Kibra Lang’ata sub-county, the question of WHAT NEXT AFTER HIGH SCHOOL was answered through the various talks and motivational talks given by the invited guests
The Chief Guest was Mr. Johnson Mwakazi of Royal Media, whose inspirational story had a major impact given that he was born in Kibra.
His talk on business had the following key lessons:
- Know- know what you have today is most important. Give what you have today.
- Grow- grow yourself and people will look for you just as people go to a mango tree for the fruits.
- Sow- Take yourself as a seed. Put value in others, they will remember you for that.
The next speaker, Mr. Rafael Mahulo, CEO Ignite Africa, started by sharing that he is alumnus of the Starays Secondary School where he developed a passion for giving back to the society. He is also a former resident of Kibra, his message focused on two main questions:
- What makes you to wake up- passion to fulfill Gods’ desire for my life?
- What would I have changed- if I had known who I am earlier in life, I would better. Always know you have the potential to be whoever you wish to be in life.
“Expose yourself to the right things and move yourself to the next level of excellence. Life is full of choices and you are either wise or otherwise”
- Mr Mahulo
The final speaker was Ms. Leah Mtimba, Classic FM Presenter, who gave her personal sad story which helped her become who she is today.
Her advice to the youth was to choose mentors in life that would walk with them and help shape their life.
Her concluding remark was “What you do about your abilities determines how great you will become”
